Fat Besties

The Client

Fat Besties is a grassroots community for fat positivity for people in Canada.

They recognize that fatphobia, or fear of fat people or fatness, impacts and harms all people. They recognize that fat bodies may also carry other identities that are oppressed by society, including race, gender, religion, ethnicity, ability, sexuality, class, or age.

The Project

Founder Kate Fish approached me about a redesign for the Fat Besties website which already resided on the Squarespace 7.0 platform. Rather than re-build the sit on the 7.1 platform, we maximized Kate’s budget for a redesign on the existing site, plus a set of custom illustrations.

The Design

“bright, fun, welcome”

I looked for stock photos of fat people simply existing rather than doing yoga or “posing bravely” in lingerie or a swimsuit. To add interest to the stock photos, I created panels of two related photos, one with a shape cutout.

 Kate says…

I reached out to Elizabeth after seeing some illustrations that really struck a chord with me on another website—I knew she would be a person who would be able to create visuals that would be a great fit for our community. Elizabeth was a great communicator from start to finish, asking lots of questions and keeping in touch along the way. She did her research in finding out what would be important to our audience and portrayed people who are often marginalized in a beautiful, fun, and inclusive way. I look forward to working with Elizabeth again in the future, and suggest that you do, too!
